Beyond Accra

Walk In Pink 3.0 carried the movement beyond Greater Accra for the first time, reaching the Volta Region community of Aglorkpovia. A chartered bus carried participants from the capital to stand alongside the local community.

Over 500 people attended and approximately 300 were screened by The Trust Hospital team. Drama performed in the local dialect carried the breast-cancer message deeper than any flyer could, and inter-village sports brought everyone together.

The screenings uncovered 20 suspected cases, and among them was one man. Most of the women could not afford medical care, and some had gone to shrines seeking treatment, so by the time we found them the cancer had already spread. The foundation took them through test after test to begin treatment, and was hit hard by the financial reality of what follow-up care costs.

Those 20 people changed the mission. 3.0 proved the movement could travel, but it also proved that finding a case is only the beginning, and it is why Sponsor-A-Mammogram and early detection sit at the heart of everything we do.
