Treatment
Breast cancer treatment has improved enormously, and most people have more than one option. The right plan depends on the type, the stage, and the person, and a care team will explain what suits each individual.
Common treatments
- Surgery removes the cancer (lumpectomy) or the whole breast (mastectomy)
- Radiotherapy uses targeted radiation to destroy any remaining cancer cells
- Chemotherapy uses medicines that kill cancer cells throughout the body
- Hormone therapy treats cancers that grow in response to hormones
- Targeted therapy uses newer medicines aimed at specific features of the cancer
Treatment is a team effort
Most people have a combination of these, often alongside support for side effects and emotional wellbeing. Asking questions, and having people around you, makes a real difference.
